ABC 7: Volunteers plant sea oats on Coquina Beach to fight storm surge

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. (WWSB) - On Coquina Beach South on Monday, volunteers gathered with Keep Manatee Beautiful to help plant 600 sea oats.

The salt-loving species has roots that can grow up to 30 feet deep, which protects against storm surge and erosion. It also helps keep dunes in place.

“It’s imperative that we have these in place before we have the next storm come through,” said Jennifer Hoffman from Keep Manatee Beautiful. “They help stop the forward motion of that water,” she said.

Hoffman was timing the volunteers as they planted the hundreds of sea oats. She told ABC7 she was doing this to figure out how many people they are going to need for their large planting event next month. That’s when they will plant 12,000 of them.

They will need over 300 volunteers. The event will happen July 26 from 7-11 p.m at Coquina Beach on Gulf Drive South, Bradenton Beach.
